Dyslexia can be described as a developmental condition that interferes with reading and writing. It is also a neurological condition in which the brain of the dyslexic shows distinct differences from “normal” children. EFT is very useful in addressing and releasing the core issues creating the condition in the first place.
"Tricia” (not her real name), came to me with dyslexia, which had been interfering with her full enjoyment of life ever since she could remember - at college, in her employment as well as in the family unit. Every area of her life was affected and she was now "pretty much ready to try anything!”.
Dyslexia is a difficulty with printed matter and interpretation of it. We decided to break it up into parts and deal with them separately. This article together with the next one are compressed versions of those sessions.
Tricia first chose some situations she remembered from school, in Maths and English classes.
We have all been there in the maths class: you get more marks from the working out than for getting the answer right. The step by step sequence of the working out can be a genuine problem for dyslexics, who are likely to know the answer instinctively and, in view of the fact that the “working out” is subliminal, they do not, if truth be told, appreciate how they arrived at the answer. The result is they are often accused of “cheating”. The anxiety of the whole situation builds cumulatively throughout school life.
The first part of the session, therefore, dealt with the difficulty of breaking the process up into steps and the teacher’s attitude to her difficulty:
“Even though miss said Tricia, you’re making this too complicated … and I have to agree with her … because even one step is too complicated! … “
The maths teacher had apparently been quite sympathetic to Tricia’s difficulties, unlike the English teacher, who had been, from Tricia’s point of view, thoroughly unpleasant.
“Even though sir took my work, screwed it up into a ball and threw it across the room …. “
“Even though that English descriptive piece was not complicated enough for sir …”
The dyslexic subconscious leap can be really fantastically helpful in adult life - who wouldn't want to balance their cheque book so easily? Having dealt with every part of the negative, after that we did a few rounds of eft in appreciation of the positive:
“Even though my teachers didn’t understand my intuitive leaps - and neither did I … I do now … “
“I really appreciate my subconscious for doing all the work for me”
"I’m so grateful that my subconscious is so clever … “
By the last part of the session, Tricia’s facility with learning lists and reproducing them in order had improved substantially. She told me soon after that, not merely was she able to work out the things involved in quite complex activities, but also as a side product, her bond with her brother had improved dramatically.
