When you learn Reiki, you attend a class and receive four initiations over two days. Reiki Initiations "tune you in" to the Reiki system.
I'ts ok to be sceptical. It may be that the whole "initiation" thing is outside your experience and possibly seems a little odd. It all seemed very strange to me, too, to begin with.
Reiki is making great inroads into the mainstream now. When I first started Reiki back in the 90s, it was hardly heard of and some people considered it dangerous, foreign and generally suspect. My family were against it and I had a few difficult moments there, until they experienced the effects of Reiki for themselves. From me, obviously.
Reiki is going mainstream in two ways: first, it's considered a pretty much essential add on to massage therapy - a typical treatment is relaxing, stress relieving and less intrusive than massage because the person receiving the treatment keeps their clothes on.
Secondly, Reiki is increasingly being used in a medical setting, very much for the same reason. Because it's so relaxing, a Reiki treatment can help recovery after an operation; it can reduce anxiety and increase quality of life after major surgery; and it can help people cope with the treatment options for cancer.
